Hallo zusammen,

Hallo zusammen,
Sorry I am not sure if English is allowed here. If not, then I can try in my very bad German... but feel free to respond in either German or English as my reading level is better than my writing.

I have a A2/2 which is presenting the same problem as others have here. Level display constantly about 50% and a background hum. I bought some spare capacitors, a multimeter, and a soldering iron to try and fix it. I have some experience with this kind of thing but it has been a while. The last job I did that was similar was build a headphone amplifier (bottlehead crack) and that went well, so I trust that I can learn even if I probably make some dumb mistakes.

When I opened it up I expected a simple swap of the C822 but the capacitor seems to be showing some voltage and does not appear dead (this could be my first dumb mistake of measuring it wrong...). I also noticed some burn marks and some soldering joints which look sloppy. I've attached some photos here of the situation. I would greatly appreciate if someone here can take a look and let me know if there is a larger problem than just the C822.

Vielen Dank, David

Hi David,
a few questions upfront...
There are two versions of the A2, which differ a little bit. (notably in the phono pre-amp section).
Can you show us a picture of the front and/or of the main board section at the right back? Then we'll know which one it is?
Then, do you have the schematics (and can you read & understand it,) and may be the service manual, too?
How did you measure the capacitor / you know how to do it?
And, sorry for asking - I don't want to embarrass anybody - you know the different kinds of capacitors, like electrolytic, ceramic, bipolar, etc.?
Yours, Gereon

Hi Gereon,

Thanks for your reply. I have the A2/2 with the CD input instead of a second Phono. Here are some photos to verify:
Bild

Bild

I also have the CD of all the manuals and schematics from Klaus Kötterheinrich at radiodesign.de. I can understand some of the schematics but the stromlaufplan / circuit diagrams are new to me. I can understand the concept of how they are drawn but I cannot really read them yet, it is like looking at sheet music. However the drawing of the circuit board itself like this one:Bild
is a bit easier for me to understand (although it seems to be mirrored which makes it difficult to identify where each capacitor/resistor is located, i found shining a flashlight from the top makes it easier to see where they are located at the bottom.)

To measure the capacitor I used a multimeter and placed the 2 probes like this (it is difficult to take a photo while doing this but I placed the probes at the end of the 2 leads sticking out of the solder joints):
Bild

I set the multimeter to various numbers either on these two settings (note that I took the photo while it was not touching anything. When I took the measurement the number that shows up is constantly moving up and down so I am not sure if I am measuring correctly):
Bild
Bild

And regarding the different kinds of capacitors, I know that there are different types and I bought some of the electrolytic capacitors referenced in the "Elkoliste Braun Atelier A2-2" I saw posted here. I have a few 1uF 50v, 10uf 50V, and 22uf 50v electrolytic capacitors. Don't worry about embarrassing me, as I said I know I am a beginner at this especially in comparison to a lot of the more experienced people here. I'm just happy to get any kind of help!
Thanks, David

Hi David,
to measure a capacitor (this applies to a resistor, too), you have to desolder at least one of the joints.
Otherwise the reading is incorrect because you measure some of the surrounding components with it.
(Years ago, I fell for that trap, too... :zwink: )
The other thing: To measure the capacity, you need an equipment that can do that.
Your UNI-T 131D multimeter hasn't got the ability to do that, it only reads
- resistance (Ω for unit "Ohm"),
- voltage (V for unit "Volt"),
- current (A for unit "Ampère"), and
- pass (corresponds to resistance) - this is where the yellow sign for a diode is (at 08:00 on the dial)
Check out an UNI-T 61E, it has a special kind of jumper you have to fix on it to measure capacity (F for unit "Farad").
A capacitor should have an infinite resistance / no pass.

Please read about these basics before you go on. There should be tutorials on youtube, for example.
I strongly advise you to ask a local friend to help you.

Please bear in mind that electricity can be lethal.
You should have read the safety instructions for this forum.
And even if you don't have:
Everything you do is at your own risk, the help you get here NEVER IS [meant to be] a foolproved step-by-step instruction for everybody!

Having said that I'm sorry to add that I will leave it at that because it's very difficult to explain to a beginner the complex work & way to find the cause of a fault like the one in the A2.
I would recommend to drop in at a repair café. You could let the experienced folks there help you to fix the problem AND learn from them all the way through!
There are 20(!) repair cafés in Amsterdam, so there should be at least one of them close to your place.
Depending on Corona restrictions you should find somebody to help and maybe even tutor you.
What do you think?

Yours, Gereon

Auf Deutsch (stark gekürzt):
Hi David,

Hi Gereon,
Thanks for the advice. I will look into getting the proper measurement device. I am aware that there is a large risk when dealing with electricity and made sure to be safe about it. I intend to further go into the basic tutorials on youtube, etc before beginning. I just opened it up to take a look at what I am dealing with and wanted to check to see if the burn marks and the solder joints are something I also need to worry about? It seems like others have burn marks on the circuit board but I am not sure if those solder joints look healthy or not...

I actually bought this with the intention of having fix-up project so that I can learn a bit more about these kind of repairs. I have another A2/1 which works fine and I am using as my main device. The idea was try and repair this one so I can upgrade to the A2/2. Although I am inexperienced I think that I trust myself to pick up the knowledge even if it will probably take a bit longer than most. As I mentioned, I have previously built a (more simple) headphone amplifier from a kit that has some of the same components. So I don't think I am completely hopeless and am normally good at picking this kind of stuff up. But that was a while ago and I probably lost some of that knowledge which I need to re-learn. I also did some basic belt changes and motor adjustment on my C2, which I know is much simpler but it got me a bit familiar with the inside of the Atelier devices.

But if all goes wrong, and I know that these Braun Atelier devices are more difficult than usual because of everything is packed tightly, then I will have to end up taking it to a repair shop. But I would feel a bit defeated if I didn't at least try myself :|

It is good to know that there are 20 repair shops in Amsterdam! Do you mind sharing where you found that list?

My first instinct, after properly educating myself on the basics and safety, would be to resolder the joints which look burnt and then replace the C822 and possibly the other surrounding 8xx series capacitors in that initial photo I posted. From reading the solutions posted here and a few other threads, which I can mostly follow, that seems like the most common solution. I just want to know if I am on the right track and if thats a good place to start?

Hi David,
that is a good start. The bad (maybe some "cold" ones among them) soldering joints definitely have to be dealt with.
"Cold" soldering joints can lead to nondestinctive status of the connection and thus to erratic behaviour of the wiring...
The burning marks show that the components were very much stressed. That made them age more quickly.

Take into account that every replacing of a component is a possibility you built in another fault by yourself.
Nobody is free of this, so bear that in mind.
Yes, to replace the 8xx capacitors is a good idea, especially to replace the big four capacitors C851-C854.
But all of that is no guarantee you nailed the fault... :zwink:

Yours, Gereon

P.S. I knew the idea behind repair cafés came from a Dutch lady... You just have to search the internet for "repair café" and there is a location finder on their website.

Good to know, I'll do some more research and then possibly start there. And yes I am aware that I could cause more damage, which would be a shame since the number of these devices are limited. That's why I want to make sure to be careful and not cause any irreversible damage. But as you mentioned, I do understand that there is no foolproof step-by-step solution.

Thanks again for your help and I'll give an update when I get somewhere (hopefully with good news). Ich drücke die Daumen :)

Ich bin es jedenfalls nicht.

Hallo,

Nachtrag
C822*, C509a/b durch 1mF/50 Folienkondensator ersetzt.
Auswirkung:
- Cliping Anzeige funktioniert wieder
- Brummen nahezu verschwunden.
* der war gestripped

Nachtrag Ende

P.S. Guter TIPP :thumb:

Viele Grüße
Lars

edit Paparierer: Das freut uns!

Hi again,
I also managed to repair my A2/2 with the same issues (detailed above). I replaced the C822 and now the level indicators work and humming sound is gone. I will eventually replace the rest of the capacitors but for now I will enjoy my small victory and first repair of this device :)
Thanks for all of the help!
And for any english speakers or people who are maybe scared of a large repair, if you follow the steps given here (while paying very close attention to safety!) it is a relatively easy fix which you can learn with a bit of research and if you know how to use a soldering iron.
